Creating a Presentation with Prezi

I was looking for a way to create a presentation when I realized my new computer did not have Power point installed in the Microsoft package… uggghh! I’m looking to go MAC and I won’t be back! Any way I thought I would make a quick post to share with you how cool and simple it was to make this presentation of the YTB Travel Site.

As you know power point is linear and it turns pages like a book but with this Prezi it is like looking into information by changing focus… going into a picture and discovering more information.. really nice. I added video as well and that was as simple as having the link. The soft ware did the real work and it was very simple to use. I watched a couple of tutorials and voila. Hope you enjoy this…

Cartress Ross no relations… Shares an Excellent Small Business Idea

Just imagine owning a simple business built solely on your own images, concepts and ideas… a T shirt Business? I was researching information and came across a very simple process to make T shirts better for a young lady at the Center and for those who are making custom shirts from home. After checking this video out I went to the web site and it was so simple to navigate and easy to gain knowledge, I decided to make a comment and add this to my blog. I hope everyone who subscribes to my site will check this out and tell a friend. Here’s why. It had the elements I spoke about in a previous blog post:

Trust, Like or Believe.

There are three reason people do business with you. They like you. If they like you they will move forward in many cases nearly 99% of the time. If they trust you, they will make a decision and if they believe what you say is true… they will tell someone. I teach this in my workshop and it’s true online as well. How can you build that in 30 seconds? You usually can’t, that is why commercials play over, over and over again. If they Interrupt you and gain your attention that is good but then what? Have you ever seen some half naked woman sitting on an expensive motorcycle, or standing with some really cool tools in her hands that she is obviously not dressed to use? She is there for one reason… get your attention, after that the rest of what happens needs to gain your trust, turn on the like and believe buttons. I Stumbled-Upon this video, I liked it… I trusted the information I heard and here it is now on my site. I believe the company can deliver. I have no interest in the company itself but I know my subscribers or others who read my blog and who are looking for something just might check this out. If it works for them… then my goal will be met… ”I’ve helped someone add to their quality of life.”

Re-posting my updated Rat Race Article on Disputation

In my last article I mentioned… The A B C of a Disputation. By now if you continued to follow the information written you would have a decision to make based upon the Disputation.  A “Disputation” is basically a challenge to your own belief. This Choice allows you to develop a plan of action.

The Power is in the Action! Not the Thinking or the Choice but the ability to reach forth and Do Something. It’s time to Turn on your Thoughts! Every millionaire makes this part of his/her regular daily activity, they Think on Purpose and then they Take Steps towards the things they have spent purposeful thought on. By making your thoughts deliberate, you will produce the opportunities needed to get the results you are already committed to! Sounds crazy right? So you want to make money on-line… What Affiliate will you choose? How do you choose the Right one? It may not be the best… but it needs to be Right for You. Specific… When you made your Disputation what did you Decide? Will you market a Info Product? A How to Book? Green Tea? What Problem will you Solve?

Break out of the Rat Race as a Newbie… by focusing. Take your Disputation and look at the  Challenge and Take a specific action. Choose an Affiliate. This will not be based upon luck, chance or anything of the sort. It is based upon a definite idea… a real true demand. What did you Demand? Will it to happen and let’s go get the life you desire. You will start to make Money online as soon as you decide exactly “How” you plan to get it!

One night, I was awaken by my mind working on the thought and about 3 am I said out loud “I Will Make Money with my Online Business ” I then created my affirmation… I am sweat-lessly recruiting, promoting and making $500,000 by December 2014″  the next thing I know, I received a letter in the mail from a top trainer regarding Making Money on the Internet! I did not order it … It came to Me! Seek and Ye Shall Find is Powerful but ASK! and it shall be Given to You is even more Powerful!   It’s biblical and it’s no secret, it works because it is a principle of this Kingdom… Anthony Robbins said it, Napoleon Hill said it, Les Brown says it and I said it…

“Any true idea “Acted Upon” will result in Riches far above the conceived thought”

Employee or Ownership… What’s best for our Youth?

For a while now I have written about humans services, multi-level or network marketing, training tips and youth development. I was listening to NPR National Public Radio where the topic was dedicated to issues surrounding  the unemployed college graduates. This topic also made it’s way into the debates.  Youth development in High School teaches young people how to be employees even when society is teaching them to be the “Boss.” The fear of many of the students is that the market recovery is not producing enough jobs for all of the graduates. Another factor is the under-employment experienced by many of the graduates as well. They are getting part time jobs… in fields out of their career choice and some are plain frustrated.

My belief is that if you really think about the issue… it’s a choice between working for themselves or someone else. To work for them selves they still need to have good work ethics. It may also require some specialized skill. I’d like to offer a few thoughts about this… Let’s say they like to talk about snow boarding? or You Tube or The Voice or maybe President Obama and the issues facing our world. How can they take those events or ideas and make money? If they are in college to learn a special skill them most likely they will get a job in that area but if they are earning a degree in say Liberal Arts? where will they start once they graduate? I am actually dealing with this topic as a Out of the home dad. (another blog topic later) with my daughter. She has changed her major three times in one year. Her friends have changed theirs as well. One just decided not to major in anything because she is afraid if she picks one she will not be able to get a job later… it’s very frightening to say the least. So here’s the choice… be an Employee or an Owner.

I teach in my workshops, that you need to own a small business while you attend college. You really don’t need to worry about what it is you want to do the first two years because things change. Once you get to year number three focus. Blogging like this is another way to make money part time as well. The fun is getting paid to blog, but how?

Understanding Youth in Transition Wrap Up

The class was filled with everyone from a Parent with two children with Autism to a newly selected Youth transition Coordinator. It was great! The air was charged with questions and great expectations for a 3 hour power session designed to explore the topic of Youth and Transition. For me it is a great topic that will need a lot of support from those who are the providers of services to those parents who are wondering; What will happen to my son or daughter after graduation? How can I help my drug dependent child be successful? What do we do when the supports we have had for 15 to 20 years suddenly stop! It is a topic that demands the attention of all providers large and small.

Attendees wanted to know about helping our youth gain meaningful outcomes through improving their lives. In the audience was a wonderful new business owner who had began a Transition program named Ms. Danielle, who said…”It was something that I needed to stay Inspired!” I was reminded by her comment that not only was this workshop dedicated to helping the attendees gain insight into Youth Transition, it was also built to Inspire! and to motivate and empower those who attended.

So many times people attend training that is dry, non-engaging and very slow paced. There is a time for that… It’s just not for me! (smile) I like fast hitting active participation in my training. So as we engaged there was a time where I covered challenging the beliefs of our youth by using a Disputation!  It is a simple process where we ask questions and then we expand the possibilities.

So here are the keys: Dispute the true belief in order to help them get past where they might be if where they are isn’t working for them the way they want.
Here’s an example…

Let’s say that you have a youth who is engaged in “Drug Use.” This can and is a very damaging practice and most young people who do drugs believe they are invincible. They can live forever or the exact opposite they see no value in their lives and want to self destruct at all cost. Well as I presented I reminded them that in order for anyone to do anything they must have a system of belief to support it. To change anything you must challenge that belief that supports it… Here’s the A-B-Cs of Change! I call it a Disputation.

A-  What actions are supporting the habit or challenge?

B- What is the belief sustaining the actions?

C- What do you need to DO to challenge the belief?

If you can get them to change the belief you can have the actions produce a better outcome. Actions will change when your belief changes about what you are doing. It sounds too simple… “too basic…”  one of the evaluations said. The reality is most things are simple and they get complicated through over thinking them. So I invite you to take a moment and think of something you want changed…

Set up the Disputation and Do what you discover as a way to change your direction. Change is never change until there is Change. Let’s go change some lives… One simple challenge at a time.

Staff Development: Thought of the Week… Traditional Work Schedules?

As a Director of a Vocational program and recent registered travel agent, I have the dubious distinction to recruit people to work on my team and at work I hire and fire people who seem not to be quite in line with the mission or goal of the organization. For some this is a very powerful position and others not so good. Changing the lives of people with a quick Documentation or Letter of Reprimand can be very difficult… especially if the person has the heart of the agency or organization in mind.

Today’s post ask; “Is a traditional work schedule for every body… What do you do about the plague of staff lateness and absenteeism.” It’s just not something anyone should live with. We must not take it for granted. Being late or not showing up leaves the organization in a scramble to fill the gap that this person may leave.


Starting a business may make sense. Standard work schedules not for every body. .

Such is the case for “Mary.” About 2 months ago a wonderful personal;ity showed up to work for my organization. I had the pre-interview and in my case I invited her to the day in the life allowing her to see the organization at work… it was wonderful. She smiled…  I smiled… we talked and walked on a tour othe facility and then she came to work for the organization after being interviewed by not only me but a board of three others. The first week to three weeks she was calling in late two or three times. Her shift began at 8:45 but she came at 8:52 but singed in at 8:45 I had her come to my office we talked she said she was working on something but this would not be an issue and off she went. About 8 days passed and she called out again, and was late three times in the next coming weeks. This time I had her and her supervisor in my office. I explained how she was doing a great job helping us build a new program and in the midst of talking with her she asked if she would be considered for a full time position? I asked, “Are you working someplace else now which is creating a issue for you to work the hours we have given you here?”  (32.5) per week and her answer was clear… No. I am not working anywhere else. Is there a life issue you are dealing with that may be getting in the way of your schedule? Not at this time… well can you tell me why you are not currectly meeting the expectation of the organization to be here on time and work your scheduled hours?

The room was silent and her answer once again was, “you know I am really doing the best that I can and it won’t happen again.” I woke up late and had insomnia but I am taking some medications for it and I think it should be fine. I went on to explain that if she needs help we have a process for that, but she said, “No it will be fine.”  What do you do? Take her word for it? It will be fine? It wasn’t… it’s not… Houston we have a problem! I gave her a few more supportive options, asked for her thoughts and assured her that when she is at work the things that she brings to the table are good but she can only be placed in sub status if she can not work the scheduled shift she will lose her position all together.

Fast forward to yesterday and Thursday and guess what… she did not show but called and was suppose to come in late but didn’t? Is she trying to draw Unemployment? weighed heavily on my mind. 

I’m in a Employment-At-Will state and truly do not need a reason to let her go. I guess as of Monday, she may be looking for a job. Her supervisor thinks so… the Executive Director thinks so and yes… I think so as well. There are nearly 15 million people who are unemployed in the US right now during this posting and in my state the numbers are about 6.7 % which is better that the national average, however this person is not able to maintain a position, even when help is offered. I’m not sure what is going on but when I was taught about work showing up was the primary concern becasue most people can be taught what to do at work… dependability and accountability is intransic.     DR.

President Barack Obama gives thanks and so do I

As we end the month of November I am wondering how most of the American people who needed health care are giving thanks. I am wondering if those pastors and preachers who said just “don’t vote” are giving thanks when the one they did not vote for still became the President? How are blended families giving thanks since the end of “institutional segregation” and of course how are you giving thanks this Thanksgiving?

I am thankful for God of the Bible who gave his gift Jesus Christ as a substitute for my sins on the cross. My wife and the consistent love she gives me. I am thankful for my children who make my life worth the trials and obstacles that I have overcome of no consequence because of their love. I am thankful for my grandchildren… some amazing little people who light up the room with the energy and temperament that makes being a grandfather all the better. I am thankful for those who are my students and staff who give me access to their lives so that they can do better and get ahead in life. I am thankful for friends and acquaintances who are there for accountability. As a veteran I am thankful for those who are on the front-lines of our military ans working behind the scenes. I am thankful for my pastor who teaches me that “God has done everything he is going to do..” the rest is up to me! Don’t wait on things to fall from heaven… Go and make something happen! I am thankful for people with disabilities who challenge me to improve and explore the best practices throughout the land so that Direct Support Staff can be looked upon as Professionals and not just an entry level job… it’s a career.

 

Finally, I am thankful for a place in the world where you can have a voice… a choice…. and freedom to live as you desire without too many sanctions and everyone can pursue Happy-ness as they desire. Yes, there are rules and biblical principles and a world of truths that we all must face but here in the United States of America… we can go from nothing to the highest seat of authority in the land the Congress and President of the United States. We can start a small company named Coke and one day see it everywhere in the world. We can start a small computer company and see them in every home in America and soon to be the world… I am thankful for America! Black, Brown, Red, Yellow, White and so many hues in between. The America I am part of is diverse. It’s robust… it’s alive and dynamic. Not just Black and White, but as Martin Luther King Jr. said,”Not judged by the color of their skin but by the Content of their Character.” Does President Barack Obama have a few flaws? Of course he does, he’s human but he’s attempting to do what some only talked about… His policies are in place to help and support the visions of a Nation of the People By the People. I’m not sure what the future holds for America, but this thanksgiving, I want to thank the U.S.A. may we continue to be as the change in 1948-1951 states…

“One Nation Under God, Indivisible with Liberty and Justice for All…”

Why am I a Board Member for Foster Care Shines?

This post is dedicated to word WHY.

“He that has the highest why will survive any How!”     This is a quote from the book Man’s Quest for Meaning by Victor Frankel he was a gentleman who survived the concentration camps during the reign of Adolf Hitler. He was sent to a death camp where beyond his capacity many dreadful things happened. One thing he shares is exactly how your mindset can either hurt you or help you. What you think on while in any situation can either send you into the storm or protect you from  it. Most of the people I meet fail in the battle of the mind. They have what Zig- Ziglar coined as “Stinking thinkin.” I realized that had not had a post dedicated to the Why in quite some time. I also realized that my involvement with foster care wasn’t highlighted as well as it could be so today I can meet to objectives with one post!

Nearly a year ago, I received a call to make a difference in the lives of foster care youth who are aging out of the system. I discovered that many of the youth leaving foster care were ill prepared as young adults. Many of the females were getting involved with young men and women who did not have their best interest in mind. For some it would be the death of them,  because they did not have a mindset that they were important and should not settle for ill treatment by anyone. Unfortunately many of the females were single parents leaving foster care or they would find them selves along with many of the men, incarcerated, on drugs or homeless. Now I wish this was an untruth however the statistics are horribly true and supported by the judicial reports everywhere across the nation.  I connected with them because I was easily one of the stats as well. I was in foster care for a very short season in my life and I suffered too.

Here’s a very sad but true story:

 
My mom died young and my brother and I were placed in foster care because the State of New York, (back then) said my grandfather was too old to care for us. We were 5 and 8 years old. I share more of this story in my book”No More Crumbs from the Table.” So I guess what has happened is my life story has asked for me to make a difference in the lives of today’s youth and one group are those aging up in and those exiting out of foster care.

My Why? is to truly lower the numbers of those who are incarcerated… single parents and or homeless! I joined Foster Care Shines Inc. a Non profit organization who makes this quest a primary focus. As the Eduction and Training officer I hope to make the conversation of Foster Care Youth exiting out of the system some thing that we all can do something about in a very positive way.

In May 2012, this year we held the first annual Foster Care Shines Dream Extreme!  It was successful and it was awesome. We brought the community together to talk about this topic and we engaged with the community through the Arts. Check out the Twitter page here… FCS Tweets. We plan to do it again next May… We had a variety of people who gave their time and talent to the cause. People such as Mr. Stacy Jordan, The IMPAC Mime Team, Damon Terrell, Dana  Jason & Cynthia Weathers of Above Only Entertainment and so many others… 

We will be getting together to get ready for Dream Extreme 2013  It’s sure to be an awesome event!

Turning part time interest into potential income?

Here’s another interesting online information opportunity in the area of my interest… traveling and training!  I would like to be known as a traveling trainer. Not only would I train in my local area but I would travel to cool places and perhaps get an opportunity to relax in the most amazing places. Wanna Go? How about getting a little bit of relaxation and relating in the Bahamas? Now of course if you were on the east coast you know recently Sandy came through blowing all types of dreams to the wayside but as always… it’s natural for the storms to come in and clear the way for new things, ideas and in some cases, renewed desires to go to exotic places.

I sat in a very informative workshop today where I found out how a person with disabilities could make money in the world of travel. Not only can they make money, they can help others make money as well. This is really cool because they can set up travel options for married couples, romantic getaways for couples and make a substantial commission from one of the premier resort providers, “Sandals All Inclusive Resorts.”

I was guided to take a tour of their really informative videos and picture based web site.  While I was learning, I was introduced to a blind agent. That’s right, an agent was at this training and he was blind. He did not have a travel trainer with him but he was using his cane. He was there as a guest of another blind person who has recently won an award for booking travel. I was sitting there thinking how many other disabled individuals are sitting at home listening to the radio or television when they could be here learning how to increase their income? I realized the word needs to get out to everyone, including those who are visually impaired or blind.  It was obvious that this person wanted to turn their part time into potential income and they were in the right place. I invite you to learn more about this amazing industry and the possibility of helping Individuals earn life sustainable wages or incomes instead of always volunteering or working for min or sub-min wage!  Sandals pays commission to lead people to their web site. You don’t need to close the deal… just get it started.  There were about 40 other people listening to how they can help couples and families take an all inclusive honeymoon, wedding or family vacation. They learned how to explain the reason why an all inclusive vacation could be the best trip you have ever planned. The potential income from assisting Sandals is endless.

Watch This:
No minimums not caps, no glass ceiling, no discrimination, no education requirement it’s amazing. You become certified and that’s like getting a real estate certification, x-ray technician certification, phlebotomy certification and any other certification that sets you a part form the average Joe blow.  So what should you do? Tell every individual you know with a disability that they do not need to work for sub minimum wage… or volunteer for ever, They can make money in the exciting travel industry.

As I have said. “my goal is to share information, build a network and make suggestions in the MLM industry.”  This is a great way for me to take my passion for training and my goals for creating multiple streams of income and merge them together. In my next post, I will continue to talk about Shifting Your Focus and No More Crumbs from the Table. I saw an excellent presentation about getting away from the crumbs! No More Crumbs… Take a Time Out

Have you seen the ads for Casinos? Well today I am sitting in one of the locations that may be transformed into a casino. Yes, America I’m here in the wonderful Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort in Flint-stone Maryland. The trees are a symphony of colors from the palest greens to the most robust reds and oranges you can imagine and it’s not as pretty as it was last year according to another traveler. I’m here to learn and improve the lives of those who are considered “disabled.”

As I looked over the workshop offerings I was drawn to the title; “Better Employment Outcomes through School Partnerships. The word “Partnerships” jumped off the page. I was able to see exactly how we all can help each other if we would just form partnerships and share information. Most of us in the field are “Lone Rangers” moving in and out of policy changes hoping to survive and make a difference in the lives of those we support.

I had a chance to meet some very interesting people here on day One and I expect tomorrow the magic will begin since there were no workshops, just a cool reception, some meet and greet events and info sharing on a more grass roots level.

While in the lobby I asked a passerby if they would mind taking my camera and snapping a quick picture in this wonderful lobby area. Here’s the picture that was taken.

Afterwards however, I was sitting using the computer when the person who had taken my picture came back by and asked me a few questions regarding what I was doing here etc. Come to find out we had something in common… we both had worked our way up to being Directors and we both were attempting top gain insight into where the state wants us to go with regards to employment first. As I shared I was reminded of the difficulty many organizations are facing with those who are more difficult to support, with the most challenging needs for support under the policies of employment first. It was an enlightening exchange of ideas. Two emerging thoughts came to surface.

1) Staff are still playing in the comfort zone and collaboration and partnerships are after thoughts versus primary engines to fuel the change we are expecting in employment

2) Some agencies are engaged in helping the persons who are more able to work than the people who have more challenging needs.  They are looking for solutions.

As the conversation continued, I shared my thoughts about one possible way to engage this population of challenging supports and I likened it as to helping people as if we were a third world country where there is little to no support for those with major difficulty to employment. The people are doing what-ever-it takes to participate in creating an income. they are not always looking for a job but they are engaged in micro -enterprise.

They make pottery pots, twist things from plants into baskets, work a loom to make scarves or other clothing items. even if they are using one finger and barely have use of their sight they are working together, they are in partnership with someone and the produce something that can be marketed to the masses.

As I have stated before, everyone can do something… we just need to explore.  We need to discover exactly what skill the person has because every single person was born into this world with something… some little ability that can be engaged to make their lives better.  As the conversation continued I invited the person into further exploration with the hopes of finding or discovering ideas that can make us all more successful as we strive to make life better for those we support. I believe we need more conversations. We need to share more… There’s an old concept that has become loss in today’s face paced world. It’s the Village concept. We need to rediscover the village.

The elders need to return and share their thoughts and strategies and with this village concept we can create partnerships that make sense and impact the world in a more passionate, creative and purposeful way.

I hung out at Annie’s Art Gallery with Dr. Dula and this was his strategy. let’s bring the village concept back. We need to Kings, Queens, elders and everyone to come togher and share ideas again. It happens here and there but today more than ever we need it to be the model. We need each other whether we want to beleive this or not. We can do more if we just begin to work together. By the way, while I was here i had a chance to walk the beautifl lake and resort. I’m not sure who wins when you change a resort into a casino. Yes it will create jobs but are these the types of jobs we want to produce when we know families will be broken, salaries will be wasted and some lives will be totally destroyed. Well in the village the elders would have had the last word and today it may mean taking a time out.
