CSMD.edu/ChooseCivility used this picture for a pretty cool discussion… What’s your thoughts?

I would like to know what do you see?   What words come to mind?   Colors?   Feelings?   Thoughts?

At CSM (College of Southern Maryland) on October 28th a group of Professionals met and began a discussion relating to the very picture used on this website for the discussion on Equality and Civility. I was among the group and had a wonderful time sharing insights with many of my peers in the community (this was community forum) and other professionals who work in or around the field of Human Services.

I recently posted a podcast regarding this picture and my experience in the group… Click here to listen…   At any rate

Reposted from an article titled: Five Minutes with a Freedom Rider posted on the web site tusb.stanford.edu  Here is the link

The Freedom Rides were a notable part of the Civil Rights Movement, where an interracial group of bus riders set out to test a new law outlawing segregation in transportation terminals.  Sponsored by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the riders used nonviolent, civil disobedience to highlight the injustice of segregation and Jim Crow laws.

One of the Freedom Riders who spoke on the panel earlier today was Helen Singleton, a former student of Santa Monica City College at the time, who decided to get on the bus for social justice.  After the event, I asked Helen five questions:

1) You used nonviolence as a strategy to highlight the injustice of segregation – is there ever a place for violence in a social movement?

Helen: No. That’s the short answer… click here to go to the link above and read the article. [wpsr_socialbts]

Finding Jobs for the Disabled

Overcoming barriers to employment for those who are disabled is a very engaging task… but it must be done. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is above 70% Seventy percent! and it’s time to do something to reduce this number… here’s how.

Barriers to Employment… Truth?

Dwayne Ross provides On site Human Service Staff Development Training, Youth Development, Online Travel Marketing and MLM information reviews, Blog Training & Suggestions.

Multiple Barriers to Employment?

What exactly is a barrier anyway? Is it truth or perceived. Let’s explore this question…
I was very excited this week as I was able to revisit this topic with about 20 trainees. The biggest barrier that came out of the class however was actually related to management and not the actual people they supported. management who are stuck in doing things the old fashion way. This was an actually good part of the conversation because many job coaches and employment specialist are going out and telling what they will do to support the person without actually finding out what the employer wants to do… or they don’t even take time to get to know the culture of the environment they are attempting to gain the placement. Another issue is the internal thoughts that drive their work… Do they even believe the person they support can actually find, secure and maintain employment? This is a very big problem. During our short time together I wanted to remind the attendees that they must begin with two foundational truths:

“Most Decisions are based Not upon what is true… but upon what is perceived to be True… and If you don’t believe…borrow someone’s belief.”

Employers base their assumptions of how a person will work or not work on what is thought to be true. A person comes in with a Major degree… he or she has maintained a particular background and the thought is… they will make a great XY or Z. Is this true?

An Individual whom they support needs a job… he or she likes likes people… the case manager or job coach often times will jump to the job and decide, Billy or Sally wants to work in retail! but is this true? I believe you need to explore a little deeper. I took the group on an imaginary walk through time using the cast of Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion and Toto too. (Most of us age 40+ are familiar with the story and new grads have had this story in at least once in psych class) I began by asking, What were the barriers each of these characters had to face? What were they looking for? What did they need to be successful and what was success for each of them? Did the scarecrow really need a brain? and what about those ruby slippers? Didn’t she have them the entire trip to see Mr. Oz?Was the Tin Man disabled without his oil can? What were their diff-abilities?

The answers were diverse… everyone could state issues that every character had including Toto but this class was small so we didn’t engage Toto’s character (but just in case you wondered… one of his barriers was transportation… he required total assistance in some areas) By the end of the exercise, I asked the question …”What was the most significant barrier? and did it stop any of them from reaching their goal? So what is stopping you? What ‘s stopping the person who is homeless? the drug addict? the person diagnosed with intellectual disability… or autism? Truth or Perception?

It’s time to Shift Our Focus and Focus on Possibility not Limitations.

I explained that there are systems that keep people stuck… give people access or place people in perpetual circles without hope for a better life. Systems work when people don’t but I also reminded everyone that they can create a better system. They have the ability by focusing on one person at a time…  to impact one person by digging deeper and creating a new paradigm of expectation. If a person is missing an eye… totally blind or can’t even walk… there’s always endless possibilities. Our job should be constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of life of those we support.

As practitioners, we can help people push through the barriers into possibility. Isn’t that what we all are suppose to do?   Let me know what you think. Be blessed.

Last night was a very busy one in the neighborhood as usual. As a board member of two non profit organizations I am always looking for ways to improve the services we offer or the supports we provide in the community. The Foundation Center of DC was having a mission driven business mixer and it was excellent. Not because it was right on K Street in Dc and not because I was able to park for less than $7.00  and it was easy to locate a place… but because I met some fabulous life changers.

I need to give a few shout outs to some very creative organization Owners, Board Presidents, Directors,Executives and even a few practitioners. I first met Brian who has a Real Estate Investment Company but he was at thew function to discover how to start a Foundation to serve young people in the area of STEM. As I mixed through the room another encounter was with Kristin and she was the Director of the Neighborhood Farm Initiative. Her support organization is serving over 200 students and they all are engaged in learning how to effectively create and sustain farms that grow real food right in the hood! Awesome!  One of the task I had as I moved through the room was to discover, “who was a Vegan.” I noticed two ladies talking with each other and one was wearing a beautiful Indian or African garment that was very attractive to the eye and seemed to be made of fine linen with very ornate design. I walked over and quickly introduced my self only to discover that Yes Ms. Edith is a vegan! and not only that, the lady she was speaking with is a holistic practitioner in the area of whole body wellness. Her name is Ms. Beatrice.  The time frame to meet people was specifically set by the host and most conversations were limited to 2 to 5 minutes. It was refreshing to meet over ten new people who all had something unique to share with one another.  I continued about listening and sharing and met up with Lisa. Now Lisa is a Consultant from LisaVogt.com in the areas of communication, digital media and a strategist. She can help any organization improve their public relations efforts or marketing. Lisa shared that due to some reorganization in her field she was expanding supports to the community and she wanted to help build others.  My pastor Dewayne Freeman from Spirit of Faith Christian Center talks about how we as believers need to be Others minded. always looking for ways to empower others and make a difference in their lives. Lisa was doing exactly that. She was speaking with a young lady who wanted to expand her home business. She and her sister have a company called www.pFitwear.com her name was Shenandoah. There was true diversity in the room… everyone wanted to ensure they were on purpose.

As you know my book talks about that… Purpose! We all have one. That leads me to a gentleman I met named Matt. He is the blogger who has the blog catholicfriedrice.blogspot.com Matt and I shared the idea that there is one constant denominator relating to most men who find themselves as adults facing problems and it is the lack of a father figure.  He is currently using his purpose to write a book titled “The fatherhood.” As you may know i wrote No More Crumbs from the Table as a result of a workshop designed to help people locate the gift, talent and ability they were born to do.

What do you have a passion for? What were you born to do? Maybe you should play Mingo-Bingo!       More on this later!

Turn Your Shift Around part 2

Hey there… so I had an interesting conversation with Mrs C my Music Sensory Instructor. We talked about how so many of us start out in our lives with this wonderful idea of how the world works and where we will be by age 30 etc. It is uncanny how so many people are truly lost in some other part of the community or world when they thought they had a really cool GPS that was going to get them to the nice house, the nice high paying job, the really hot girl or boy friend, the most amazing dog and oh don’t forget the picket fence… okay maybe not the picket fence, I never wanted that. I wanted the nice big iron gates where the you had to hit the button to be let in… you get the picture.

Check out this President Who decided to Shift His Focus!

I was not sure what was going to happen but I knew it wasn’t happening with the way things were going. To get any of things you want to manifest you must endure the process to get there. The process is what you must over come, be patient for etc. while you wait to get to the destination. Most of us will not wait. We will change course and end up in places we never should have been and it may cause us to delay in getting what we truly desired.

I was unaware that I was rerouted. I just thought this is another thing that life deals you and well you live through it and that’s how life works. I never questioned my own reasoning that had taken me off course. The most amazing thing is as long as you have breath, you can get back on track. If you hadn’t damaged your self beyond repair… you may still have an opportunity to bring your ship around. As Eisenstein said, “Most people will focus on what is and never truly see what can be.” They get caught in what didn’t happen or how it went wring, or what they don’t have and the missed opportunities etc.

I Think I can... "As a Man Thinks... so is he."

What are you focused on? Your lack? the negative people in your life? the obstacles in the way? the lack of education or any other perceived deficiency? It was really sad how far off course I was but it was exciting that I realized I could still win! You can win! No matter what. Shift your focus on the now. Shift your focus on where you are and then create a plan  to get where you want to be. Get an image of what it is you want not what you don’t want. See your self as if it has already come to pass. The GPS is the road map, the blueprint, the guide that will help you access your perceptions. Some people would rather be lost that to turn on the GPS. They say things like, “I’m the captain of this ship… I know where I’m going… If it’s to be if up to me.” It sounds great, but is it really working for you. I don’t know anyone who has made any significant strides all by themselves. They had a team of consultants, team mates and so many other impact players on their side.

One of the first things you will benefit from when shifting your focus is setting the vision. Where is it that you want to go? Is it your plan or someone else’s? Do you have a passion for  it? Let’s expand on this thought…

Turn Your Shift Around…

Dwayne Ross provides On site Human Service Staff Development Training, Youth Development, Online Travel Marketing and MLM information reviews, Blog Training & Suggestions

At one time I was on a business trip in the mountains, I was standing by the lake in Big Bear and I asked about the next excursion cruise and what time it was going out that evening. There was a really nice looking lady standing there, she looked to be in her early thirties standing all alone by the pier and she seemed to be alone.  She said, “The Cruisers stopped running for the evening but there’s a really nice art gallery you might like and it’s open for at least another two hours right across from the restaurant about 7 minutes.

I could have said, “No thank you, I really wanted to go on the lake and relax on the cruise.”  How would she know what I might like and she never even met me? So I thought about it, I went to the gallery. I was standing in the gallery when I noticed the most amazing eagle statue. It was all beautifully hand crafted out of what seemed to be a beautiful piece of drift wood of sorts. The face was so intense, “It was as if I was staring into the soul of a real eagle… It was Mesmerizing.”  Here’s a video of a similar’s artist work… I searched years later and never could find the piece I saw that day. If I find it later, I will update this post in the mean time enjoy this piece of passion from a great artist in his sixties!

StephenHerrero.com

As I looked a little deeper at the face, I could see there seemed to be a small trail on the face guiding me to turn the piece around so I did. “What is this I wondered and a beautiful surprise was right on the other side… It had an entire eagle scene over a prairie like area with cowboys and Native Americans and desert beauty all carved in the backside of the eagle’s eyes and the entire bust.”  That experience caused me to look into the qualities of an eagle, by doing so it created a desire in me to “Shift My Focus” which became the title   of my next book.  It gave me an insight into the fact that although you may see a good thing on the surface, if you shift your focus you can see greater things inside you and others.  It’s time to stir up your gift, talent and ability and go after your dreams!

“If you want to be a writer… Write! A singer… Sing… a Lawyer… passes the bar!”  It’s up to you.

You will never know who or what God has placed in your life to inspire you to take action. One thing is for sure he’s not going to come down from heaven and do it for you! You must be the one who does all the doing. If it’s to be it’s up to thee, no one else. Sure there’s divine intervention etc. Encounters with spiritual this and that but the reality of which you are… greatness is already deposited in you at birth. Goodness is already deposited in you. Talent is already deposited in you… What you water will come forth… Greed… anger etc. all of it. You have the potential for life or death… good or evil… you are universal and the universe is good. It gives life. So what will you give?

I wrote my first book No More Crumbs from the Table to help you identify your talents, gifts and abilities… Shift Your Focus to help propel people into their destiny.   To assist people in going after the dreams again even if they are over 45 years old as I am. It’s not over… it’s not finished. If you can breathe, you have a chance…                                  Go get it done! The world is waiting on you!

I Think I can... "As a Man Thinks... so is he."

My next post:  I had an interesting conversation with Mrs C my Music Sensory Instructor. Rodney Lamb asks… What’s Your Tax Strategy?

Dwayne Ross provides On site Human Service Staff Development Training, Youth Development, Online Travel Marketing and MLM information reviews, Blog Training & Suggestions

In many of my most recent post I like to talk about why owning a business is just the right thing to do if you get only a W-2. Why is it so important? Because you are losing over 50% of your income as a working couple. As a single person +40% is going directly to the IRS.

I love that fact that we all pay taxes. What I don’t like is how some of the more wealthy families pay less than most of the very hard working families in America. Why? It’s simple. Wealthy families have a TAX Strategy. Not only do they have a tax plan, they use it for Everything. I was on line in a restaurant once and I could over hear someone saying they only pay what they have to pay… It intrigued me because I knew we all had to pay taxes if we live here in the USA. Taxes pay for children to go to school free, roads to be repaired after storms, families to gain access to health care if they are below the poverty level and so many really important things. The truth of the matter is, most over pay in taxes. It’s not really the topic of the day… until Now! I read an article about a gentleman named Rodney Lamb. The article explained how he and his wife and his team of business partners help people set up Tax Saving programs. Tax Strategies! His question when approaching potential partners is simple… “What’s Your Tax Strategy?”

What's Your Tax Strategy?
Meet Rodney Lamb

“As a tax professional I understand the great tax benefits associated with owning a home-based business. So, I came up with the question, “What’s your tax strategy?” That question is how our team leads the conversation. The average taxpaying citizen has no tax strategy, and with the tax codes and tax laws ever changing, we teach that everyone needs a strategy. And a home-based business is one of the best tax strategies ever! Travel in particular, because your business could potentially be anywhere in the world and also be tax deductible. We teach how to legally convert your everyday living expenses into tax deductions. A good tax strategy in today’s financial climate is a must. When we ask someone, ‘What’s yours?” and they tell us they don’t have one, we ask, ‘Can we suggest one?’ He invites them to YTB.. So I guess I want to ask you again…

Check This Out Now… http://bit.ly/12d2LAR

What’s your Tax Strategy? Do you have a good one? If not… we need to talk. Let’s connect on Face-book, Twitter, Message me, Leave a comment, e-Mail me… call me!    DR.
