Disabled mannequins will be eliciting astonished looks from passers-by on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse today. Between the perfect mannequins, there will be figures with scoliosis or brittle bone disease modelling the latest fashions. One will have shortened limbs; the other a malformed spine. The campaign has been devised for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by Pro Infirmis, an organisation for the disabled. Entitled “Because who is perfect? Get closer.”, it is designed to provoke reflection on the acceptance of people with disabilities. Director Alain Gsponer has captured the campaign as a short film. My thoughts were after reading the comments of others who took time to check this post out. I am still amazed at how cold some people are in commenting about people with disabilities. Especially regarding the constant fight for inclusion that they are in everyday. Some try to compare it to Slavery but that is just not the case. It has it’s own lane. Some compare it to the GBLT fight and it’s not comparable. Having a physical or developmental disability is something that we can’t only legislate, but we need to take internal reflection and ask our selves how is it acceptable to continue over looking such an amazing part of our humanness.
